Valentine’s Day has always felt like a performance to me. A ritualised version of what we are supposed to feel. I wanted to paint the emotion underneath the performance: the nervousness, the longing, the midnight urgency of a woman rushing toward the person she wants. The bracelet inscription came to me before anything else in the painting. It asked the question. The rest of the composition became the answer.
The combination of eroticism and modern art finds clear expression in this painting. The artist poses a rhetorical question about happiness, rendered in two languages and displayed on the girl’s shoulder. On the bracelet at her wrist, the inscription reads “Saint Valentine”.
The girl is searching for her happiness on Valentine’s Day. She rushes toward a date, and in the midnight darkness, her languid lips return the confession of a passionate and devoted admirer.
