I painted The Alien when I was thinking about the feeling of not belonging to the time or world you find yourself in. Sometimes the weight of what is happening on this planet becomes impossible to hold. The woman in this painting is not from here, and that distance gives her a clarity we cannot allow ourselves. She sees what we have chosen not to see. And then she turns away.
This painting is called The Alien because the woman looks at the Earth from space and is amazed, and horrified, by everything she witnesses. She feels the weight of it deep within her and suddenly hides her face.
The Alien is afraid of the catastrophe unfolding on planet Earth, yet she holds the belief that sooner or later, people will find a path that allows them to live in peace. She is proof that the human decisions we make must consider the global situation and place stability above all else.
